Zoe Eme ’26: Reflection on the 2024 Governor’s School for the Arts

Junior Zoe Eme ‘26 was accepted to the 2024 Governor’s School for the Arts. She studied dance at the University of Kentucky.

What was your favorite part about the experience?

I really enjoyed being surrounded by people my age and from Kentucky who have the same passion for the arts as me. There were portions in the program where artforms would collaborate. For example, dance and creative writing worked together to choreograph and write a piece about planets. It was very interesting to be a part of a process that combined multiple artforms to create an innovative work.

What are some things that you learned and how can you apply those lessons to your junior and senior years at Pres and beyond?

I learned how to express myself through art and to persevere through rigorous situations. Applying what I have learned to my final years at Presentation Academy and my life after, I will have the confidence to be myself and challenge myself to do things that may seem “impossible.” I hope to integrate the many artforms I was exposed to at GSA to my Senior Independent Project at Presentation Academy, if accepted. I have learned that I can achieve great things at GSA and I will continue to strive for greatness throughout my life.

How did your experience influence your thoughts about college and the future?

The experience of being on a college campus and being an independent artist allowed me to preview what college may be like. With the setting of GSA and being able to persevere through challenges, I feel as though I am more prepared for the next step after high school. GSA has made me realize the power of the arts and the struggle that the arts are facing in the modern world. With this realization, I will work to support the arts in as many ways as possible in the future.

Do you know what type of career you want to pursue or what you might want to major in? If this is non-art related, how will you keep art in your life?

Currently, I have a plethora of ideas about the career I want to pursue. As a person who wants to try everything, it is difficult to settle on one career because I have passions that fall on both sides of the spectrum. For example, I am interested in cinematography, architecture, advertising, Customs and Border Patrol (CBP), psychology, etc.! If I end up choosing a major that is non-art related, I will pursue the arts as a hobby and continue to be a patron of the arts.
